Is Upwork Great or Heinous?

Julie Ross Myers

Upwork has been around long enough to accrue digital immortality. It began as oDesk, merged with Elance in 2013, and rebranded as Upwork in 2015. Former CEO Stephane Kasriel said, "The entire freelance market is moving online. Within a few years we are going to go from having 50,000 freelancers on the online marketplace to 500,000 independent workers online."

Upwork is a digital hive with thousands of writers buzzing to get hired. The Upwork algorithm favors writers who have numerous positive reviews. In order to accumulate reviews, a writer must take on dozens of low-paying projects. Most seasoned writers won't be happy with five cents a word, but freelancer Phyllis Romero describes how Upwork can be great for newbies who want to earn while learning.

But it that fair to clients who believe they are hiring an expert?

I don't think so.

On the other hand, most Upwork clients aren't looking for brilliant quality. They want something done on the cheap. And sites like Upwork are perfect because freelancers are pressured to lower their rates to win jobs.

No one wants to pay more than they have to. Upwork could be a good choice if you need simple blog articles written around one or two keywords. It is not your best choice if you need brand-savvy copy or conversion writing that will get leads.
