I’m not the best choice for every client and every client is not the best choice for me. I’m fairly objective about what I do well and not so well. For example, I’m a terrible proofreader of my own work. For some reason I have yet to fathom, I’ll read right over a typot. On the other hand, I am very good at figuring out how to position products and services.
Small Business Websites, Sometimes
I build WordPress websites. This covers a lot of ground. If you need a website with basic e-commerce functionality, I can do it. If you need a website that has more than a few products, I am not your best choice. There are better coders and developers.
The advantage of using me to create your website is that I provide the content. You get a turnkey product.
You don’t have to worry about it. The websites are conceptually stronger because the content and navigation have been worked out together instead of piecemeal.
On the other hand, if you have the content and just need to update the look of your website, you can easily hire a developer to do it cheaply. If you are a photographer and have very little written content, you could probably build your site yourself at Wix or Squarespace. In fact, if you simply need a website to look professional, but don’t rely on one for traffic, consider building it yourself using a drag and drop template system. It’s not hard to do and I’m sure you could use the money you save in some other way. If you need a website to capture leads, WordPress offers more functionality.
By “web content,” I mean the static pages on your site, not your blog. Some websites function as online corporate brochures. The pages have to be well-written but they aren’t sales pages. Almost any writer can write them, including a journalist or a blogger. You can get this done for around $50 to $75 per page if you look around. On the other hand, if you need to use your website as a sales tool, your content needs to be persuasive. Your product or service needs to be positioned correctly. Your content has to created a brand, or personality, for your company. Journalists and bloggers don’t know how to do this. It is the specialty of copywriters like myself. Sometimes, too, writing is not the best use of your money if you have to prioritize your spending. If you are selling a product, you may be better off investing in top-quality photography instead of writing.
Marketing And Advertising Copy
This covers a lot of ground, because marketing copy is not about the media channel. It is a way of thinking that is employed, whether your channel is the Internet, print, or something else. Definitely, this is where copywriters shine. I love putting the pieces of a puzzle together, in terms of making a brand work in a scalable, flexible but accurate way. Branding… understanding the personality and positioning of your company… is my strong suit. I just have a knack for zeroing in on things. There is only one client I have not been able to brand properly – myself. It is almost impossible for even seasoned pros to see themselves objectively. So I do what I recommend… I get the feedback and direction of people in the industry that I like and respect. And I pay them, either in dollars or in trade.
